£250, or £150 with a package: ninety minutes somewhere you like, to practise being photographed

Engagement shoots

Ninety minutes with one of us, somewhere you like, a few months before the wedding: a walk, a coffee, the dog if you have one. It is practice for being photographed by us and for us learning how you are together, and the pictures are for the invitations, the table plan and the wall.

A couple standing in a long-grass meadow at golden hour with rolling Welsh hills behind, the bride's veil lifting in the wind

Almost nobody enjoys being photographed, and the engagement shoot exists to get that over with before the wedding: ninety minutes of walking and talking with a camera along, so that on the day you already know what we do and we already know how you two stand near each other. Couples who do one are visibly more relaxed in their wedding portraits, which is the whole argument.

Pick somewhere you like: the beach you walk the dog on, the pub you met in, a hill, the city. We meet in the last two hours of light, walk, talk, and photograph; there is no posing beyond "walk towards me" and "look at each other", and the dog is welcome. Sixty or more edited images in a fortnight, in the same gallery system as the wedding, with full-size downloads and print rights.

With a package it is £150 and we recommend it; on its own it is £250 and we do a few a month for proposals, anniversaries and people who simply want good pictures of themselves. Autumn and spring are the best light; summer is late evening; winter is an afternoon and a flask.

Questions about engagement

Is it worth it?

For the wedding portraits, yes: the difference between a couple who have done one and a couple who have not is visible in the first five minutes. It is also where the save-the-date picture comes from.

What should we wear?

What you would wear to a nice dinner, in colours that go together but do not match, and shoes you can walk in. We will send a note with the booking.

Check your date, then tell us about the day.

The availability page says which dates are already taken. If yours is free, the form takes two minutes, we reply within the working day, and a video call that week with a £400 deposit holds it. If it is gone, we will say so and suggest two photographers we would book ourselves.
