Cardamom buns, sourdough, eggs, soup, until three

Brunch and buns

Cardamom and cinnamon buns from the oven at the back from eight, sourdough from the bakery on the next street with eggs, avocado or beans, a winter soup and a summer granola. Small, done well, finished by three.

A café breakfast on a wooden table: sourdough toast with smashed avocado and poached eggs, a cardamom bun and a flat white

The food is here to go with the coffee, not the other way round. Six things, made that morning, and a bun that people drive from Cardiff for.

The buns are made before we open by Dafydd, who used to bake for a living and now does it for us: cardamom, cinnamon, and a seasonal one that is rhubarb in spring and plum in autumn. Sourdough comes from the bakery on Windsor Road at seven and is toasted to order with eggs from a farm in Llancarfan, smashed avocado with chilli and lime, or beans we make ourselves. Soup in winter, granola with Vale yoghurt in summer.

Everything is on the board and the board does not change much, because a short menu is a fresh one. Allergens are on the sheet by the till; the buns contain wheat, dairy and egg, and the beans are vegan. Brunch stops at three so the kitchen can clean down; coffee and buns, while they last, carry on.
