Café menu

The menu, and the board.

Short on purpose. The espresso recipe for the day is on the board behind the counter with the name of whoever dialled it in; the filter changes every week or two. Any milk, no surcharge; decaf the same price as everything else.

A café breakfast on a wooden table: sourdough toast with smashed avocado and poached eggs, a cardamom bun and a flat white

Takeaway in a cup you bring or in ours; 20p off for your own. Allergens on the sheet by the till: the buns contain wheat, dairy and egg; the beans and the banana bread are vegan; gluten-free bread is available for the toasts. Card and cash.

The board

Dose, yield, time, and who dialled it in.

Every morning the first barista on tastes the espresso, adjusts the grinder until it is right, and writes the recipe on the board: how many grams in, how many out, how many seconds, and their initials. If you want to know why your flat white tastes different on a Thursday, that is where the answer is. If it is not right, we pull it and start again, and the batch brew is free while we do.
