Fencing and decking

Fences that stay up in a Vale gale, in closeboard, slatted cedar or composite, plus decks, pergolas, raised beds and the timber bones of a garden.

A garden with horizontal slatted cedar fencing and a raised composite deck with built-in bench and planters

The wind comes off the Bristol Channel without much in the way. A fence here is built for that or it is built twice.

Posts are concreted 600 mm into the ground, or bolted to concrete godfathers where the ground is rock, at 1.8 metre centres with a gravel board at the bottom so the timber never touches soil. Closeboard is the strongest and the best value; slatted cedar or thermowood screens are the ones in the photographs; composite boards never need painting. We take the old fence away.

Decks are built on a treated timber frame on concrete pads with the boards on joists at 400 mm centres, which is why ours do not bounce. Composite boards for low maintenance, hardwood or treated softwood for budget. Pergolas, raised beds, bin stores and bike sheds are built to the same standard from the same timber.

Questions about fences & decks

Whose fence is it?

Usually the deeds say; often they do not. We will put the new fence on your side of the boundary and talk to the neighbour with you if it helps. Most of our fences are paid for half each.

Start with a visit.

Cerys comes to the garden, measures it and listens, for free. A sketch follows, then a plan, then one price. No pressure at any stage; some people build it three summers later.
