Long, flowing strokes at a pressure you choose; sixty minutes £58, ninety £82

Swedish relaxation massage

The classic full-body relaxation massage: long, flowing strokes, kneading and gentle stretches at a pressure you choose, with warm oil and warm towels, in a quiet room with the blinds down. Sixty minutes is back, legs, arms, neck and shoulders; ninety adds the feet, hands and scalp.

Swedish massage is what most people mean by "a massage", and it is the one we recommend if you have not had one before or just want an hour off. It is designed to relax, not to fix, and it does that very well.

The massage starts with long gliding strokes to warm the muscles, then kneading, gentle friction and rhythmic movements, finishing with slower strokes again. The pressure is whatever you ask for: many people choose light and slow, some like it firmer, and we check during the massage rather than assume.

Sixty minutes covers the back, the backs of the legs, the fronts of the legs, the arms, and the neck and shoulders. Ninety minutes adds the feet, the hands and a scalp massage, and lets everything go at a slower pace. You are covered with warm towels throughout, and only the area being worked on is uncovered.

Afterwards there is tea, a glass of water and no hurry. Most people feel sleepy and a little heavy; some feel lighter and clearer. Both are normal.
