The track with the slate sign, past the village.

A quarter of a mile past Whitebrook on the right, between the hedges, down to the farmhouse at the top of the field. Park by the barn; the pods are a two-minute walk down the meadow paths, and Tom brings the bags down on the quad if you ask. The gate code comes by text the day before.

The wooded Wye valley at dusk seen from a hillside meadow, the river glinting below, a bell tent glowing at the edge of the field

Getting here, parking, access and the season

The site

Wye Hollow, Whitebrook, Monmouth NP25 4TX: the track on the right a quarter of a mile past the village, with the slate sign and the postbox, running down between the hedges to the farmhouse at the top of the field. Park by the barn; the pods are a two-minute walk down the meadow paths and we take the bags down on the quad if you ask.

Getting here

From the A466 Wye valley road between Monmouth and Tintern, turn at Bigsweir Bridge for Whitebrook and follow the lane up the valley for a mile and a half. Monmouth is four miles and fifteen minutes; Chepstow twenty-five minutes; the Severn Bridge forty; Cardiff an hour. The nearest station is Chepstow (fourteen miles) with the 69 bus to Monmouth; a taxi from Chepstow is about £30, and we collect from the Monmouth bus for the price of a hamper.

Parking

Two cars a pod by the barn on the gravel, and a field for more when the whole site is hired. The track is single-width with passing places and fine for a normal car; a motorhome will not get down it and there is nowhere to park one. Electric cars can charge at the barn from a 13-amp socket overnight, slowly.

Access

The Cabin is step-free from the gravel with a ramp to the porch and a level shower; the barn and the shower block are step-free with a wide cubicle. The Bell Tent and the Hut are up a deck step; the Treehouse is a staircase and a rope bridge and we say so. The meadow paths are mown grass, a struggle in a wheelchair after rain; the beach is a slope of shingle.

Dogs, children and fires

Dogs in three pods at £8 a night, off the lead in the fenced meadow, on it in the wood. Children free in the sleeps, a cot and a high chair in every pod, the beach shallow at the near end. Fires in the pits only, out by midnight, the first basket of wood in the price.

The season and the hours

Open from the first of March to the last day of October; closed through the winter. Arrive from 3pm with the gate code texted the day before; leave by 11am. The phone is answered from 8am to 8pm every day of the season and the farmhouse is at the top of the track for anything else. Hampers and canoes are ordered by 6pm the day before.

Lost in the lanes? Every satnav sends people to the old mill first. Ring 01600 496 0580 and Tom will talk you up the valley.

Pick the pod, pick the nights, and see every one of them priced.

The availability page shows every night of the season for every pod, taken or free, and quotes a stay with the price for each night. Then one form books it; Elin replies within two hours, 8am to 8pm, and a deposit of a night holds it.
