Microneedling is a controlled injury that the skin repairs by making collagen. It is the most effective thing we do for acne scarring and texture, and it is a commitment: the change builds over months, not days, and it takes a course.
The pen carries a sterile single-use cartridge of fine needles and moves across the skin at a depth set for each area: shallower on the forehead, deeper on the cheeks where scarring usually sits. Numbing cream goes on thirty minutes before, and most people describe the treatment as a vibrating scratch. The whole appointment is an hour.
Skin is red, like mild sunburn, for a day or two, and slightly rough for a few more. No make-up for 24 hours, no exercise or saunas for 48, and SPF 50 every day. New collagen forms over three months after each session, which is why sessions are four weeks apart and why results are judged three months after the last.
Microneedling is not for active, inflamed acne, cold sores, eczema on the face, or anyone on isotretinoin or within six months of finishing it. Rolled ice-pick scars improve; deep ones may need a dermatologist. We say which yours are at the consultation.
