The stone barn across the yard for eighty seated, the bar as your bar, the six rooms for the wedding party, £2,200 for the weekend

Weddings in the barn

The stone barn across the yard, restored in 2016, seats eighty at long tables for a wedding breakfast and holds a hundred and twenty for the evening, with the inn's own bar, the garden to the canal and the six rooms for the wedding party. £2,200 for the barn from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning including the six rooms on the Saturday night, a three-course feast at £48 a head, and a party evening in the barn for £650. About fifteen weddings a year, one a weekend.

The inside of a restored stone barn set for a wedding breakfast: long wooden tables with white cloths, foliage and candles, festoon lights strung from oak beams, open doors onto a yard

The barn was the coaching stables and then a hay store for a hundred years, and in 2016 we put a roof on it that does not leak, a floor you can dance on, heating, and doors onto the yard. It seats eighty at long tables for a wedding breakfast, which is the number that fills it without anybody being by the door, and the bar is the pub's bar, which is the point.

The weekend: the barn from Friday afternoon to set up, the ceremony in the barn (licensed for a hundred) or at the church in the village two hundred metres away, drinks in the garden with the canal behind, the feast at long tables, the band or a DJ on the barn floor until midnight, the bar until half past twelve, and the six rooms for the wedding party on the Saturday night with breakfast in the restaurant on Sunday morning. £2,200 for all of that, with the feast at £48 a head for three courses from a menu Gwen writes with you (the lamb is the thing people ask for), the evening food at £14 a head, and drinks at bar prices or a package at £28 a head for a reception drink, half a bottle of wine and a toast.

We do about fifteen weddings a year, one a weekend, and the pub stays open to the village on the day, because a wedding in a pub that has closed to the village is a wedding in a function room. Guests who are not in the six rooms have two bed-and-breakfasts in the village, the hotels in Crickhowell a mile away, and a minibus we book for you. A party evening (a birthday, an anniversary, a wake) is the barn from six to midnight for £650 with the evening food at £14 a head. A £500 deposit holds the date; the balance is due a month before.

Questions about weddings

Can we bring our own caterer?

No, and we say so up front: the kitchen is good and it is thirty feet away. You can bring your own cake and your own band, and corkage on your own wine is £10 a bottle.

Is the barn licensed for the ceremony?

Yes, for a hundred, and the registrar comes from Brecon. The village church is two hundred metres down the lane for a church wedding, and the walk back passes the pub, which has never been a problem.

A room with the rate on the page, a roast with the covers left, a bar with the village in it.

The rooms page works tonight's rate out from the clock, the roast page shows what is left in each sitting, and one form books either, a table, the barn or Christmas. Nia replies within the hour while the bar is open; nothing is charged until we confirm.
