The rooms

The rooms, and the rate tonight.

Six rooms, each with a weekday and a weekend rate in low, mid and high season, breakfast in every one. The rate for tonight is picked out on each card from the clock; put in a date and the cards show that night instead. No booking site, no "from" price nobody has paid, and the same number by phone.

The rate for tonight

Prices a room a night including VAT and breakfast. Two nights minimum on a high-season weekend and on New Year's Eve. Dogs £10 a night in the Canal room and the Hayloft. Check-in from 3pm, out by 10:30am; bags and boots can be left all day. A cot or a Z-bed is free.

How the rates work

Three seasons, two kinds of night, and that is it.

Low season

November to March

The quiet months: the fire, the mountain in cloud, the bar to yourselves on a Tuesday. The lowest rates, and most of the walkers.

Mid season

April to June and October

Spring and October: the best walking weather, the canal busy with boats, the Easter and half-term weeks. The middle rates.

High season

July to September and the Christmas week

Summer, and the week from the twentieth of December to the second of January, when the rooms go by October. The top rates, and a two-night minimum at the weekend.

A weekend night is a Friday or a Saturday; every other night is a weekday, bank holidays included. The night you arrive is the night that counts: a Friday-to-Sunday stay is one weekend night and one weekend night, a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay is two weekday nights.

A full Welsh breakfast on a white plate on a wooden table by a window in a pub dining room: bacon, sausage, eggs, laverbread, cockles, mushrooms and toast, a pot of tea

Breakfast

The full Welsh, from eight, in every rate.

Bacon and sausage from the butcher in Crickhowell, laverbread and cockles if you want them, eggs any way, porridge with Penderyn if you are not driving, bread from the bakery, and a pot of tea that is actually a pot. From eight for guests, from half past eight for anyone else at £12, and a packed lunch for £9.50 if you ordered it by nine the night before.

  • Vegetarian and vegan full breakfasts, and gluten-free bread
  • Early breakfast at seven for a long walk, by arrangement
  • Dogs at breakfast in the bar, not the restaurant

The Hayloft and the Canal room

The two rooms for families, dogs and a lot of wet kit.

The Hayloft is across the yard over the old stables with its own stair: a double, a pair of bunks, a sofa, a big shower and room for a dog bed, which is why it takes the family with the spaniel for a wedding weekend. The Canal room is on the ground floor by the boot room with its own door into the garden: the dog room, the room for a bad knee, and the one with the towpath walkers waving past the window.

A family room in a converted hayloft: a double bed and a pair of wooden bunks under a sloping beamed ceiling, a small window onto a yard, a dog bed in the corner

Questions about the rooms

Is the rate on the website the real rate?

Yes, to the pound, including VAT and breakfast, and the same by phone, email or at the bar. We are not on the booking sites, which is why it can be.

Which rooms take dogs?

The Canal room on the ground floor and the Hayloft across the yard, £10 a dog a night, towels and a bowl provided. Dogs can also come in the bar and the garden, just not the restaurant at the roast.

A room with the rate on the page, a roast with the covers left, a bar with the village in it.

The rooms page works tonight's rate out from the clock, the roast page shows what is left in each sitting, and one form books either, a table, the barn or Christmas. Nia replies within the hour while the bar is open; nothing is charged until we confirm.
