The rooms

The price on the website was the price, breakfast was in it, and the bath looks at the mountain. Downstairs is a proper pub with the village in it, not a hotel bar with residents in it. We walked Table Mountain from the door and dried everything on the rack.

Sunday roast

Checked the roast page on Wednesday, saw the one o'clock had four left, rang, got it. Beef pink, Yorkshires like hats, gravy in a jug you can hold. Grandad has been coming since Huw's father had it and says the roast is better now, which he would not say lightly.

Weddings

Eighty in the barn at long tables, the lamb Gwen does, our own band, the pub still open to the village so Tom's uncle could talk to the locals about rugby, and the six rooms for the family. £2,200 for the barn and the rooms. We looked at venues four times the price with half the soul.

Walkers and dogs

Dog room on the ground floor with a door to the garden, a bed and a towel waiting, the dog allowed by the fire in the bar, and a hose for the mud. The walk sheets are honest about the boggy bits. Four casks, all Welsh, all good.

Christmas

Dinner was excellent and the band in the barn had the whole room up. Four stars because the barn is cold by the doors in December when a hundred people keep opening them; take a jumper and sit near the heaters. We will be back and we told Huw about the doors.

The bar

Our local. The quiz is a pound to the mountain rescue, the fire is lit when it should be, the beer list on the website is actually what is on the bar, and the Hayloft took my sister's family of four and their spaniel for a wedding weekend without a fuss.

About the four stars

Alun is right about the barn doors in December. There is a lobby on them now.

A hundred people opening a pair of barn doors onto a yard in December lets the valley in every time, and the heaters by the doors could not keep up. In the spring we built a timber lobby inside the doors with a second pair, so the draught stops in the porch, and we moved the heaters. Alun came to the folk session in March and said it was warm, which from Alun is a review.

The bar of an old stone pub at Christmas: a tall tree with warm lights beside a roaring inglenook fire, holly along the dark wood bar, candles on tables, snow at the window
