Home visits

Routine chiropody and diabetic foot care at home for people who cannot get to the clinic: housebound patients, people in residential homes, and people recovering from an operation. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons within three miles of Birchgrove, with the same sterile instruments in a sealed case, for the clinic price plus £18.

Some of our patients have not been able to get to a clinic for years. For them we go to the house: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, within about three miles of Birchgrove (Heath, Llanishen, Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, Gabalfa, Cathays and Roath), with the same instruments, sterilised and sealed in pouches, and the same thirty minutes of care they would have in the chair.

A home visit is booked by the person, a relative or a carer, by phone or the form. The first visit is the full forty-five-minute assessment, with the medication list and the history; after that, routine visits every six to ten weeks on the same afternoon if possible. We need somewhere to sit the patient with their foot raised, a towel, and decent light, and we bring everything else.

Instruments travel in sealed sterile pouches in a locked case and come back to the clinic autoclave; we never clean instruments in a patient's home. Dressings, creams and pads are carried and charged at cost. If we find anything that needs the clinic (nail surgery, a biomechanical assessment) we say so and help arrange transport, or we contact the community podiatry service if it needs the NHS.

Residential and care homes book the afternoon: we see several residents in one visit, at the home visit price for the first and the clinic price for the rest, and leave a written note for each in the care file. Three homes in Heath and Llanishen have had us in every eight weeks for years.

Questions about home visits

Who can have a home visit?

Anyone who cannot reasonably get to the clinic: housebound, recovering from an operation, in a care home, or without transport and unable to manage the bus. We do not ask for proof; we ask that people who can come in do.

Is it different care at home?

No: the same instruments, the same checks, the same thirty minutes. The only things we cannot do at home are nail surgery and the treadmill assessment.

The next free appointment is on this website.

A first appointment is forty-five minutes and £52: the history, the circulation and sensation checks, and the treatment itself. Book online from an hour and a half ahead or ring the clinic; two slots a day are kept for painful problems that should not wait.
