Peat-free, by the bag or the bulk bag

Compost and bark

Peat-free compost, soil improver, topsoil, ericaceous and bark, by the 50 litre bag or the 800 litre bulk bag, with a calculator to work out how much.

Most people buy too little compost, go home, run out, and come back on a Sunday. The soil calculator is here so you only make the trip once.

Our peat-free compost is a blend of composted bark, coir and green waste, made to our recipe by a blender in Herefordshire. We have sold nothing else since 2021. It behaves a little differently from the old peat bags: the top dries first while the middle stays wet, so push a finger in before you water.

Topsoil is screened and comes in the bulk bag only, because a bag of it is heavier than anyone should lift. Bark comes in three sizes: fine for paths, medium for beds, and the coarse play-grade that meets the safety standard for under swings.

A bulk bag holds 800 litres, about sixteen ordinary bags, and comes to your drive on a tail-lift. If you are filling a raised bed over about two metres long, it is usually cheaper; the calculator names the cheaper one for your measurements.

What you get

  • Peat-free multi-purpose, ericaceous and soil improver
  • Screened topsoil in bulk bags
  • Fine, medium and play-grade bark
  • Bags carried to the car; bulk bags delivered by tail-lift

What it costs

Peat-free compost £6.50 for 50 litres, four for £22. Bulk bag £75 delivered. Prices are on every label; the price list has the common ones, and the soil calculator works out how much to fill anything.

Questions about compost and bark

How do I work out how much I need?

Use the soil calculator: length, width and depth in centimetres. It adds ten per cent for settling and gives you bags, the bulk bag and the cheaper of the two.

Can you tip a bulk bag on the road?

We leave it on your drive or a hard front garden, never on the pavement or the road. If you have only a back lane, tell us when you book and we will bring it round.
