From the griddle every morning; Welsh cakes £1.20, bara brith £6.50
Welsh cakes and bara brith
Welsh cakes on the bakestone from half past seven, bara brith made to Megan's grandmother's recipe with tea-soaked fruit, teisen lap on Fridays, and all of it by post anywhere in the UK.

A bakery in Llandaff that did not make Welsh cakes would be odd, and one that made them badly would be worse. Ours are cooked on a cast-iron bakestone on the counter from half past seven, so the shop smells of them, and they are made the plain way: butter, currants, a little nutmeg, sugar on top, nothing else.
The bara brith is Megan's grandmother's recipe from Carmarthen: mixed fruit soaked overnight in strong tea, a dark loaf with no yeast, sliced thick and buttered. It keeps for a week and improves for the first three days, which is why it posts well. Teisen lap, the flat Glamorgan plate cake, is made on Fridays and goes by lunchtime.
A dozen Welsh cakes and a bara brith go by post anywhere in the UK for £19 including delivery, which is how a lot of people who grew up here and moved away get them. Boxes for St David's Day are taken from mid-February and sell out; corporate boxes with a card go to offices in Cardiff from a dozen upwards.

Questions about welsh bakes
Are the Welsh cakes made with lard?
Butter only. The old recipe used lard or a mix; we use Carmarthenshire butter because it tastes better and because it means they are vegetarian. They are not vegan; we have tried and the texture is wrong.
How long does bara brith keep?
A week in a tin, and it is better from day two. Freeze it sliced and toast from frozen. The Welsh cakes are best within three days and can also be frozen.
Can you post to Australia?
Not food, sadly; customs will not have it. Anywhere in the UK, yes, and the box goes first class on the day it is baked.
