Birthdays, weddings, christenings; from £65, three weeks' notice

Celebration cakes

Six sponges we know work, decorated by Ffion to a sketch you approve first. An eight-inch cake for twelve from £65, tiered wedding cakes from £320, and a £30 deposit that holds the date.

A three-tier celebration cake with white buttercream and fresh flowers on a stand in the bakery window

A celebration cake has one job, which is to be the cake people remember from the day. Ffion decorates every one by hand from a sketch you have already said yes to, on a sponge baked that morning, and we would rather do thirty a month well than a hundred from a catalogue.

There are six sponges: Victoria, chocolate fudge, lemon and elderflower, carrot, coffee and walnut, and a vegan chocolate that nobody can tell apart. Each is filled and covered in Swiss meringue buttercream, which holds its shape, takes colour cleanly and tastes of butter rather than sugar. Fondant is available if you want a smooth finish, but we will tell you honestly that most people prefer the buttercream.

The process is the same for a child's birthday and a wedding: you tell us the occasion, the number, the flavours and anything you have seen and liked; Ffion sends a sketch and a price within a working day; a £30 deposit holds the date; the balance is paid on collection. Fresh flowers are arranged with a florist on the next street, and cakes are delivered and set up for weddings within twenty miles for £45.

Questions about cakes

How much notice do you need?

Three weeks for a single-tier cake and six for a wedding, because the diary fills and the sketch takes a round of changes. We keep a few short-notice slots each month for a plain cake with a message; ring and ask.

Can you make a cake for a dairy or nut allergy?

Dairy, yes: the vegan chocolate sponge and an oat buttercream. Nuts: we can leave them out, and we clean down, but almonds and walnuts are in the bakery every day, so we cannot call anything nut-free and will say so on the order.

Do you do wedding tastings?

Yes, a box of all six sponges to take away for £18, refunded against the order. Saturday mornings before ten are the quiet time to come in and talk to Ffion.

Come in early, or order ahead.

Sourdough and croissants on the counter from half past seven, Welsh cakes on the bakestone, cakes to order with three weeks' notice, and wholesale to twenty-six cafés with the price list online. Ring, or use the form; a person replies within a working day.
