An open brown cardboard box lined with greaseproof paper holding marinated chicken thighs, sausages, beef burgers, lamb kofta skewers and a rack of ribs on a garden table

Every May the shop turns towards the garden. The barbecue boxes started as a way of getting people to buy the merguez, and they are now most of a summer Saturday: a box with everything for the grill, made here that morning, with a card saying what goes on first and how long it takes, because the thing that goes wrong at a barbecue is the chicken.

The Four, at £38, feeds four hungry people: four burgers, eight Pontcanna sausages, four chicken thighs in the lemon and oregano marinade, four lamb kofta, and a tub of the chimichurri. The Eight, at £68, doubles it and adds a rack of pork ribs rubbed and part-cooked so it finishes on the grill in twenty minutes. The Feast, at £125, feeds sixteen and adds a butterflied leg of Welsh lamb in rosemary and garlic and a kilo of the merguez. Swap anything for anything else of the same weight; halal lamb and chicken on request with a day's notice.

Order by Friday noon for a Saturday, or by the day before for a weekday; ring, email or use the order page and say the box and the date. Collect from the counter, or we deliver on the afternoon within four miles for £4, free over £60. The card in the box has the cooking order, the temperatures and the one rule: let the coals go grey first.

Questions about barbecue boxes

Is the box enough for the number of people?

Yes, for hungry adults, with bread and salads on the table. Four people eating well finish the Four. If you have teenagers, go up a size.

Can I have the box in winter?

Yes, from a day's notice; we just do not keep the marinades ready between October and April. Ring and say what you want.

Order ahead and skip the Saturday queue.

Pick the cut, say the weight, and the order page tells you the price before you ring. In by Friday noon and the joint is cut, wrapped and under your name on Saturday morning. Delivery within four miles on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
