Christmas

Christmas, booked to the day.

The book opens on the first of October and closes at the end of the fifteenth of December, when the farm counts its birds. Free-range bronze turkeys from near Usk, geese, a three-bird roast, ribs of beef from the cabinet, gammons we cure from October, and the trimmings made here. A £20 deposit comes off the bill; you choose a half-hour collection slot on the 23rd or the 24th.

How it works

Four steps from October to the twenty-fourth.

  1. Order while the book is open

From 1 October to 15 December: at the counter, by phone, or on the order page with "A Christmas order" chosen. Say the bird and the size, or the number at the table and we size it, and anything else from the list.

  2. A £20 deposit

Taken when the order is placed, by card over the phone or at the counter, and taken off the bill on collection. It is what tells the farm the bird is spoken for. Refunded in full if you cancel before the book closes.

  3. Pick a slot

Half-hour slots on the 23rd from 8am to 6pm and the 24th from 7am to 1pm, chosen when you order. The slot keeps the queue on the pavement to twenty minutes; most years it has mince pies and a brass band from the school.

  4. Collect, or we deliver

Everything weighed, wrapped and labelled with the cooking time. Delivery within four miles on the 23rd for £4, free over £60, in a cool box if nobody is in and you have said so.

Questions about Christmas

What if I miss the fifteenth?

After the book closes we keep a short list of unclaimed birds and anything the farm sends over, sold at the counter from the 23rd, first come first served, and we are honest that it is a short list. Beef, pork, gammon and the trimmings are on the counter all week without a booking.

Can I change the order after I have placed it?

Yes, up to the fifteenth, for anything: a bigger bird, a goose instead, more pigs in blankets. After the fifteenth the birds are fixed but the trimmings can still be added at collection.

Is the turkey fresh or frozen?

Fresh: slaughtered on the farm in the week before, dry-plucked, hung for about a week, delivered to us on the 22nd and in the cold room until your slot. Never frozen. It keeps in a fridge until Christmas Day with room to spare.

Do you do a smaller bird for two?

A two-kilo turkey crown feeds four, and we will cut a smaller one for two. A free-range chicken, a duck or a small rib of beef does two people well and is often what we would choose.

The book is open. Order the bird now and choose your slot.

A £20 deposit by card, off the bill on collection; change anything until the fifteenth of December. Turkeys, geese, ribs of beef, gammons and the trimmings, all from the farms we know.
