Free-range eggs from Llangynwyd, honey from the Garth, and the jam lady from Caerau
Local eggs and honey
Free-range eggs from a farm at Llangynwyd, two miles up the hill, delivered Tuesday and Friday; honey from twelve hives on the Garth, spring and heather; and a shelf of jams, chutneys and Welsh cakes from three people in the valley who make them in their own kitchens.

The eggs come down the hill from a farm at Llangynwyd on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the farmer's own trays, laid that week by hens that are out on the field from first light. The honey is from twelve hives on the Garth above Maesteg, kept by a retired collier who started with two in 1998; spring honey from May, and the darker heather honey from late August if the summer was kind.
Eggs are sold by the dozen, the half dozen or loose; bring the tray back and it goes back up the hill. They are mixed sizes because hens are, and we do not grade them. When the hens go off lay in midwinter there are fewer, and the shelf says so rather than filling up with somebody else's.
Next to them: honey, a shelf of jams and chutneys made by Glenys in Caerau from fruit we sell her at the end of a season, Welsh cakes from the bakehouse two doors down on Saturdays, and a Llynfi valley rapeseed oil. It is a small shelf. Everything on it is made within six miles of the till.

Questions about eggs and honey
Is the honey raw?
It is spun and strained and never heated, so yes in the usual sense. It sets in the jar by the spring; stand it in warm water.
Why are the eggs different sizes?
Because they are not graded. A dozen weighs about what a dozen medium does, and the price is the same.
