Veg boxes

I swap the beetroot every week and the page tells me what I am getting instead before I order. Rhys leaves it in the porch on a Tuesday and takes the old box back. Twenty-one pounds and I do not go near the supermarket veg aisle any more.

Wholesale

Order by text at half three, it is on the back step at seven. When tomatoes went silly in March Carol rang to say so before she bought them. Six years with them and one wrong order, credited the same morning.

The shop

I buy two potatoes, an onion and whatever is in the pound bowl, and nobody has ever made me feel it is not worth their while. The leeks in winter are the best I have had since my father's allotment.

Christmas veg

Christmas box collected on the 23rd, name on the bag, out in two minutes while the queue for the butcher went round the corner. The sprout stalk got a round of applause from the children for reasons I cannot explain.

Fruit baskets

Sent a basket to my mother on the ward at the Princess of Wales and she loved it. Four stars only because the Garw valley gets one round a week, on a Friday, so a Monday order waits. They told me that before I paid, to be fair.

Eggs and honey

Llangynwyd eggs with yolks the colour of a satsuma, and the heather honey in September before it runs out. I take the trays back and they go back up the hill. That is how a shop should be.

About the four stars

The Garw gets one round a week, and Bethan is right.

The Garw valley is over the mountain from Maesteg by the Bwlch road or round by Bridgend, and one van cannot do it more than once a week and still be back for the Maesteg porches. So it is Friday, £2.50, and a Monday order for the Garw waits. What we have done since: the boxes page now tells you the date before you order, so nobody is surprised, and a basket for the hospital goes in the car on any day if you ring before ten.
