Vaccines, antimalarials and advice, booked within the week

Travel clinic

A free travel consultation that works out what your trip needs, then the vaccines and antimalarials here, usually within the week: hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, cholera, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever as a registered centre, and the tablets for malaria. Priced per dose, written down before you decide.

Surgeries in Caerphilly stopped doing most travel vaccines years ago. We did not. Book a consultation, tell us where you are going and when, and Owen works out what you need, what the NHS still covers, what we charge for the rest, and whether there is time to fit it in before you fly.

The consultation takes twenty minutes and is free: your itinerary, how long, rural or city, what you have had before, your medical history. From that comes a written plan with each vaccine, its price and its timing, and which ones are free on the NHS, because hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and the polio booster still are for most trips. We give what we can the same day and book the rest; a rabies course needs three doses over three to four weeks, so come early.

We are a registered yellow fever centre and can issue the certificate. Antimalarials are prescribed here under a patient group direction, with the choice explained: weekly or daily, the side effects, the cost per course. We also stock the sensible things, from rehydration salts to a proper first-aid kit, and will tell you honestly what you do not need.

Questions about travel clinic

How far ahead should I come?

Which travel vaccines are free?

Hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and the diphtheria-tetanus-polio booster are usually free on the NHS when they are for travel. Rabies, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, hepatitis B for travel and meningitis ACWY are private.
