Services

Six things, most of them free.

All six

01

Prescriptions

Order your repeat prescription on this website or at the counter, we request it from your GP, dispense it and text you when it is ready: collect from the shop or have the van bring it, free, anywhere in Caerphilly county borough. Blister packs for anyone who needs them, at no charge.

NHS prescriptions are free in Wales.

02

The Common Ailments Service

In Wales the pharmacist can assess and treat twenty-six common conditions on the NHS, free, without a GP appointment: sore throat, UTI, conjunctivitis, hay fever, athlete's foot, head lice, threadworm, cold sores, dry skin, indigestion and more. Ask at the counter; we see you in the consultation room.

Free on the NHS for anyone registered with a Welsh GP.

03

Flu jabs and vaccinations

NHS flu and COVID vaccinations from September for everyone eligible, no appointment on most days, and the shingles, pneumonia and whooping cough jabs for those entitled. Not eligible on the NHS? A private flu jab is £18. Given in the consultation room by a trained pharmacist.

NHS flu, COVID, shingles and pneumonia jabs free if you are eligible.

04

Travel clinic

A free travel consultation that works out what your trip needs, then the vaccines and antimalarials here, usually within the week: hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, cholera, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever as a registered centre, and the tablets for malaria. Priced per dose, written down before you decide.

Consultation free.

05

Blood pressure and health checks

A free NHS blood pressure check for anyone over forty, with a twenty-four-hour monitor to take home if the reading is high and a report to your GP; plus cholesterol and diabetes screening, weight management on the NHS, ear wax removal by microsuction, and the emergency contraception service, all in the consultation room.

Blood pressure check free over forty, with the home monitor free if needed.

06

Medicines reviews and advice

A free NHS medicines review for anyone on several regular medicines, a Discharge Medicines Review after a hospital stay, help with inhalers, blood thinners and new prescriptions, and a pharmacist at the counter who will tell you whether the thing you are about to buy is worth the money.

Medicines reviews free on the NHS.

Prescriptions

Tick the items. We chase the surgery. You get a text.

Order on the prescriptions page, by phone or with the slip through the door. We request it from your GP the same day, follow it up if it has not come back, dispense it, check it twice and text you when it is ready: two working days, sooner if it is urgent. Collect from the counter or have Dai bring it in the van, free, Monday to Friday, anywhere in the county borough.

  • NHS prescriptions are free in Wales; so are delivery and blister packs
  • Repeat items can re-order themselves a week before they run out
  • Out-of-stock items get a phone call, not a note in the bag

How we work

Four things you can expect every time.

We chase the surgery, not you

If a repeat item needs the GP to sign it off, we send the request, follow it up and tell you where it is. You hear from us, not the other way round.

Two working days, in writing

Ordered by six on Monday, ready by Wednesday afternoon. Urgent items are flagged and usually same day. The text tells you which.

No charge for the things that matter

NHS prescriptions are free in Wales. So are delivery, the blister packs for people who need them, the blood pressure check and the common ailments consultation.

A quiet room and time to talk

Two private consultation rooms for anything you would rather not say at the counter. Medicine reviews, new prescriptions explained, the emergency contraception, the hard conversations.

The Common Ailments Service

Twenty-six things the pharmacist can treat on the NHS. No GP appointment.

Sore throat, with a swab test and antibiotics if it needs them. Urinary infection. Conjunctivitis, hay fever, athlete's foot, head lice, threadworm, cold sores, indigestion, and seventeen more. Ask at the counter, come into the consultation room, and leave with the medicine, free, and your surgery told. We do about forty a week, most of them on the days the surgery had nothing until Thursday.

  • Free on the NHS for anyone registered with a Welsh GP
  • No appointment; a wait of ten minutes or so when it is busy
  • Referred on the same day, with a reason, if it is not for us

Prescriptions

Eleven items a month, blister-packed, delivered on a Thursday by Dai, who waits while I check it. When the surgery changed one of them, Sian rang me before the pack went out to explain. Thirty years and never once a wrong tablet.

Common ailments

Sore throat on a Saturday, no chance of the GP. Walked in, swab test in the consultation room, antibiotics on the NHS in fifteen minutes, free. I did not know this service existed. Everyone should.

Jack H.Caerphilly
Travel clinic

Three weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia. Owen did the consultation for nothing, told us which jabs the NHS covered (more than we thought), priced the rest on a sheet, and had us done in two visits. The surgery had quoted six weeks and a fortune.

Questions people ask at the counter

How do I order a repeat prescription?

Tick the items on the prescriptions page, ring, or drop the slip in. We request it from your surgery, chase it if needed, and text you when it is ready, two working days later or sooner if urgent. Collect, or have the van deliver free.

Are prescriptions really free?

Yes, in Wales all NHS prescriptions are free. So are delivery, blister packs, the common ailments consultation and medicine, the blood pressure check, and the medicines review. Private vaccines and a few private services are priced on the prices page.

Can I see the pharmacist without an appointment?

Yes, any time we are open, in a private consultation room. For the twenty-six common ailments the pharmacist can treat you on the NHS without a GP appointment. If the rooms are busy the wait is usually under ten minutes.

Do you deliver?

Free, Monday to Friday, to every address in Caerphilly county borough, with our own van and driver. Dai texts before he knocks and never leaves medicines on a doorstep. Just tick "deliver" when you order.

What about when you are closed?

NHS 111 Wales for advice and emergency supplies, the out-of-hours rota on the door, and A&E for emergencies. We open bank holidays from ten to one, which most pharmacies do not.

Order a prescription, or book a service.

Repeat prescriptions ordered on the prescriptions page are ready in two working days, collected or delivered free. Flu jabs, travel vaccines, blood pressure checks and medicines reviews are booked with the form or by ringing the shop.
