Bags, pads, ropes and sleds: the hardest hour of the week, scaled to you

Boxing and conditioning

Boxing Fitness on Tuesday and Thursday nights with three heavy bags and pads with the coach, the Saturday conditioning session with sleds, ropes and the yoke on the turf lane, and one-to-one boxing with Kai. No sparring, no contact, just the fitness of boxing and the people who come for it.

A boxing corner in a gym with three heavy bags hanging from a steel beam, a teenager in gloves hitting one while a coach holds pads nearby

The boxing corner was supposed to be a bit of fun in a gym full of barbells and became the busiest class on the timetable within a year. There is no contact and no sparring: it is the bags, the pads, the footwork and the fitness, taught by someone who boxed, for people who want the hardest hour of their week with a coach shouting encouragement rather than instructions.

Boxing Fitness: forty-five minutes on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm, capped at sixteen, with rounds on the bags, pad work in pairs and with the coach, and conditioning between rounds. Scaled from "never thrown a punch" to "used to compete", and it is the class with the widest spread of ages, from sixteen to seventy. Saturday Conditioning at 9am is the turf lane: sled pushes, the yoke, battle ropes, carries and the assault bikes, in teams, for an hour, followed by the best coffee in the building.

Kai does one-to-one boxing for anyone who wants the technique properly: stance, footwork, the six punches, slipping and rolling, combinations on the pads, and the fitness that goes with it. It is personal training at the normal price. Teenagers from fourteen can train with a parent's consent and are usually the keenest people in the room. We can point you to the amateur boxing club in town if you want to compete; several of ours have.

Questions about boxing

Will I get hit?

No. There is no sparring and no contact in any class. Pad work is with the coach or a partner holding pads, and nobody throws a punch at a person.

Can my fourteen-year-old come?

To Boxing Fitness and Saturday Conditioning with a parent's consent form, and to one-to-one with Kai. Under-sixteens train on the floor only with a parent present or in a class; sixteen and over can hold a membership.

A free week. All of it. No card details.

Seven days of the floor, every class on the timetable and an induction with a trainer, booked with a name and an email. Join afterwards at the website price with no joining fee, or do not, and nobody rings you. About six in ten people join.
