Ballet, Grade 3

Seren started in Pre-Primary at three and is now in Grade 3 with a distinction in every exam, and I give the credit to the piano. There is a man playing in the corner for every ballet class, and she dances to music rather than counting under her breath. Nerys sent her back a grade at six when she was wobbly, which I resented for a month and have been grateful for since.

Street Seniors and the crew

Started street at twelve because my mate did. Marcus taught us the names of the moves and where they came from before any routine, which seemed slow and then was not. Got into the crew at fourteen and we placed second at the regionals. The free taster was the first time I had danced in front of anyone; I stood at the back for a half term and then I did not.

Adult beginners' ballet

Fifty-two, never danced, sat on the bench for six years while my daughter did Grade 1 to Grade 6, and finally did the free taster. Nerys explains every position as if it is obvious and corrects you quietly. I am two years in, I have done Grade 2 for the certificate, and I was in the show last July in the adults' number, which my daughter says was the best thing she has ever seen me do.

Tap and modern, Grade 2

Lisa's tap class is the noisiest, happiest room on Commercial Street on a Monday. Two girls, tap and modern back to back for £14, and the ISTD exams examined in the same studio so they are not scared of the room. The second-hand rail has saved us a fortune in leotards and the office sends the invoice with the half-term dates on it, which my old school never managed.

Commercial and the show

Four stars for the show costume returns: we handed Elin's back at the theatre as asked and were chased for it a fortnight later because the box was misread, which took three emails to sort. Everything else is five stars. The show itself was properly good, the commercial routine closed the first half and brought the house down, and the two guaranteed tickets per dancer meant we actually got seats, which at her last school we did not.

Ballet, Grade 1, and Street Minis

A boy in ballet, which worried him more than us, and there were eight others and a boys' changing room and Marcus telling him he started the same way. Grade 1 with a merit, Street Minis on Thursdays, and the unlimited pass means both classes and his mother in the Tuesday adult ballet for £95 a month. Nothing added, ever, and the dates of everything a term ahead.

About the four stars

The costume was returned and we chased it anyway. The box is now a list.

Mark is right. Costumes handed back at the theatre went into a box by routine and the box was ticked off by routine, not by dancer, so when one routine\'s box came up a costume short we wrote to everyone in it. His had been in the wrong box. From this year every costume has a label with the dancer\'s name, returns are signed off by name at the theatre door, and the office sends a "received" email the same night. The commercial routine still closed the first half.
