Emergencies

Our labrador bloated at eleven at night. Rang the emergency number, Owen answered, met us at the barn in fifteen minutes and operated within the hour. He is asleep on my feet as I write this. The bill was exactly what Owen said on the phone.

Senior pets

Fourteen-year-old collie with arthritis and a dodgy thyroid. Rhian sees her every six months, the nurses run the arthritis clinic, and the monthly injection has given her back the beach. The plan discount on the tablets adds up.

The end

They came to the house for our old cat and sat with us on the kitchen floor for as long as we needed. Nobody looked at a watch. A card arrived a week later, handwritten. I will not go anywhere else.

Prices

Not the cheapest vet in the Vale and they do not pretend to be, but every price is on the website and the estimate for the dental was spot on. Four stars because the Saturday morning waiting room is chaos; they could do with a second vet on.

Small pets

Rabbit stopped eating on a Sunday. Cerys saw her within the hour, fluids and syringe feeding, and she was back in the hutch demolishing hay by Tuesday. A vet who actually knows rabbits is rarer than you would think.

Vaccinations

Two puppies through the course and onto the plan. Twenty minutes each visit, questions answered without making me feel daft, and the flea stuff just turns up in the post. Sensible people.

About the four stars

Saturday mornings are chaos. Tom is right, and we have added a vet.

Saturday is when the people who work all week can come, and for a year we ran it with one vet and a queue. Since March there are two vets on from 8:30 and the nurse clinic runs alongside, which has taken the average wait from twenty-five minutes to eight. We will keep publishing the number. On prices, Tom is also right that we are not the cheapest in the Vale; we would rather be the practice that tells you the price before you ring.

Register, bring your pet in, and tell the next person what it was like. Good or bad, it stays up, and the four-star ones change how we run the place.
