First Friday of the month, in the cellar
Tastings
Six wines, some bread and cheese, and no spitting unless you want to. The first Friday of each month, at a long table in the vaulted cellar under the shop.

The cellar under the shop is the reason Hywel bought the lease. It holds fourteen people at one table, and it stays cool even in August.
Each month has a theme, which might be a region, a grape or a question ("is expensive Burgundy worth it?"). We pour six wines over about an hour and a half, say a few things about each one, and ask you what you think. Nobody is marked.
Tastings are for over-18s, and we check. There is bread, cheese and water on the table. Measures are small, 50ml a wine, so about two units a person in all, but please do not drive home afterwards. Monmouth has taxis and we can book you one.
We also run private tastings for birthdays and work groups for up to fourteen, here or at your place. Tell us the occasion and how much your group knows, and we will make it fun.
What you get
- Six wines, 50ml each
- Bread, cheese and water
- Notes to take away
- The ticket price off a case on the night
What it costs
£22 a person, taken off a case bought on the night. The prices are all together, the match tool finds three bottles for a dish, and the case builder prices a mix.
Questions about tastings
I know nothing about wine. Should I come?
That is who the first Friday is for. If you can tell us what you like, that is enough.
Are the stairs steep?
Yes: stone cellar steps with a rail. If you cannot manage them, tell us, and we will run the evening upstairs.
Tell us the dish. We will find three bottles.
Or build a mixed case and take ten per cent off, delivered free within ten miles of Monmouth. Over 18s only; we operate Challenge 25. Please drink responsibly.
